Crazy Beauty Trend: Diamond Contact Lenses
So I was perusing through the internet this morning when I came across something bizarre: diamond contact lenses. Yes, contact lenses that are encrusted with precious stones. What?
Dr. Chandrashekhar Chawan, of Shekhar Eye Research, came up with the idea to place a ring of jewels on contacts when his wife had diamond implanted on her teeth because he realized just how much people love bling. When dusting contact lenses with gold didn't provide enough sparkle, he moved on to using actual diamonds.
In order to prevent the lenses from touching the cornea, he uses Boston Scleral lenses, which are normally used to treat eye illnesses. They feature 18 diamonds on a yellow or white gold ring around the lenses, and cost 700,000 Rupees, or $15,000.
The lenses are a huge hit in their native India, especially among the Bollywood Crowd. Chawan believes that it is only a matter of time before his contacts take off around the world, citing Lady Gaga as proof that "people take time to digest [new fashion], until some celebrity starts using it." He went on to defend his creation by saying:
If your eyes are sparkling with diamonds, no one can look away; their eyes will be glued to you and your personality.
Do you think this look is cool or creepy, Lovelies? Would you wear diamond encrusted contacts? [via Shine from Yahoo! and TODAY Style]

Very cool... in a distinctly alien kind of way.
Creepy... and a waste of money. Yikes. It kind of reeks with classlessness and the need to show off.
No one will be able to stop looking into my eyes because they'd be afraid that in a moment of weakness I would inhale their soul.
i would be scared that something will fall off and bang. infection!
woow i've never thought of sticking diamonds in my eyes. very interesting post tho!
soo creepy looking!
that's how my eyes look naturally. Me and the guy at the library look like freaks because we have blue brown eyes.
They look a little creepy and I don't know how high are they on the comfort level. So, no, I wouldn't try these contact lenses if I could afford them. Of course, if I had $15K, I would buy materials to finish out my kitchen remodel instead of wasting them on a fashion piece that I am very likely to lose and possibly cause blindness. No thanks.
theres circle lenses that resemble a diamond http://www.solution-lens.com/geo-extra-diamond-green-contact-lens-sparkle-green-diamond.html.
both are excessive lolI like the not-see-through aspect of them..which means they make a cool ring even around brown eyes, which is hard to get. But I don't like thei dea that they are diamonds.
If I had 15k,I'd totally be the asshole that gets them xD
Interesting for sure. They're not personally my style (I'm scared of diamonds because gosh, that's tuition money right there!) but I can definitely see this trend taking root outside of India among celebrities.
It's unique, but eyes naturally have a distinct sparkle to them without adding artificial sparkles with diamonds. On top of that, it seems extremely uncomfortable.
I might be biased though, since I don't personally like colored contacts and any hybrids of them.
and this is why india is considered "third-world"... because there are people buying unnecessary shit like this that's probably harmful to your eyeballs to begin with.
Seems like a cool idea, but probably isn't...good for you eyes. As for the money part, eh, considering how much hip-hop/rappers spend on big ass bling full of diamonds and actresses drape themselves with diamonds and other jewels for award shows...it doesn't really seem like THAT extreme of a step. Bollywood stars have money, they are bond to spend it on something silly.
That is awesome.
@evangeliaaa@xanga - You're ignorant.
it looks so pretttyyy
@sugarpapa@xanga - sorry, but when people start buying diamonds to place atop their eyeballs just to "follow a trend" while the rest of their country is suffering from poverty, child prostitution, and lack of clean water, there's something seriously wrong. if that statement makes me ignorant, then so be it.
My eyes hurt just reading this. I hope a diamond never comes out.
what. the. fuck.
I know they said that they use Boston Scleral lenses to prevent the diamonds from touching the cornea, but if for some reason it didn't work and the diamonds scratches the eyes.... Ouch......
@evangeliaaa@xanga - That's how capitalism works.
My heart literally drops in fright when I see people with oddly colored contact lenses, it really freaks me out... but this is so Bollywood, lol
If I could afford them.. I still wouldn't put them in my eye... Then again, I was pretty hesitant to start wearing contacts to begin with!
