The saying “FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT” can work wonders on unwashed, untrimmed, unruly hair. Beyond what we've told you at least a zillion times before—to use a rich conditioner regularly— here are
Allure's top tips for faking healthy hair till you make it truly healthy again...
1. Split ends are a dead giveaway of damage. To mend them temporarily, rub a dab of non-liquidy styling cream between your fingers and pinch it over frayed pieces. Hand cream also does the trick; if you've got nothing else, conditioner will work, but only use the teeniest-tiniest dab or your ends will look stringy.
2. When your roots are oily and there's no time to shower, nothing sops up the sebum as well as dry shampoo. Powders are less sticky and a bit easier to apply than sprays, but they can result in white patches on your scalp. To ensure an even application, sprinkle the powder onto a fine-tooth comb, then rake it through your roots.
3. If you have broken hairs around your hairline, get a fringe. They also make fine hair look fuller. Just be sure to ask your stylist for a thick, not wispy, set.
4. Flatten out fly aways: Mist a little hair spray between your palms or onto a clean toothbrush, then smooth over. The result won't be as greasy as with a cream or serum, especially if your hair is fine. For really stubborn strands, add a second layer of spray and blow-dry flat on low speed.
5. An at-home glossing treatment leaves hair with the kind of luster you see in shampoo ads—and lasts longer than ordinary shine spray (through several shampoos versus several hours). Bonus: It also helps camouflage gray roots and fading highlights.

*yay* to temporarily getting rid of split ends =D
you are like a goldmine of beauty information.
#2 is gross. Who really goes out without showering first? And wouldn't putting that in your hair make your head itchy. If your really pressed for time, jump in the shower for just a few minutes just long enough to wash your hair and throw some soap on your body rinse and get out.
@XoAsianBabioX@xanga - Heh.
@Redsoxgirl631 no, it's not gross and doesn't make your head itchy.
I have thin, kinda oily hair and since i stopped washing my hair every single day (yes, i still do shower...) i use dry shampoo on the roots and my hair's never looked better :)OH, and a rich creamy conditioner isnt for everyone. i don't condition my hair in the shower anymore, it just weighs my hair down since it's thin, so i use a spray leave-on conditioner after the shower:)

you're kind of awesome. will be printing this out.
Where do you find powdered shampoos?
@phan__tom@xanga - most salons carry them, like Smart Style in Wal-Mart, or Fiesta. If those aren't near you, go to a beauty supply store. BedHead has a really good dry shampoo. If you can't find any, just use baby powder.
@Redsoxgirl631@xanga - Just because you don't wash your hair every day doesn't mean you don't shower. If I washed my hair every day, it would be very very dry, even with gobs of conditioner.
@Redsoxgirl631@xanga - Just in hypothetical terms, what if you woke up late for school or work with only 5 mins TOPS to get ready? And being late is completely out of the question. Considering in those 5 mins you would need to get dressed, wash your face and whatnot, apply some makeup maybe, and brushing your teeth is a must ... I'm know that for me, dry shampoo would come in handy.
@juliamegan - That has happened to me before..I showered for two minutes only having time to wash my hair..then I threw some clothes on, brushed my teeth and left. Makeup is not as important as being clean and not greasy if you ask me. I just put my makeup on during my morning break.
@Morningstarrising@xanga - As long as your showering and your hair is still normal and not greasy, then I don't think there is a problem with that. I was referring to what the post said. It says.. "When your roots are oily and there's no time to shower"
@phan__tom@xanga - Sephora also has some great dry shampoos
@kimisbarbie_quotes@xanga - @Kimberlee -
Thank you ! That's very helpful!
you dear=amazing.
Thanks for these tips! I always hear them... but they never seem to stick! x]
Rec a glossing treatment? Also, can I use sunsilk color boost on hair that has never been dyed? it smells like hair dye imo... thanks!
Question: Where would I be able to find dry shampoo? I can't ever seem to find it
"Get a fringe".
Or, we can work just as hard to actually have great hair instead of faking it.
@XoAsianBabioX@xanga - Totally agree!

oo i'm gonna try the fly-away one
I am currently in cosmetology school and washing your hair every day is bad..it makes your oil glands work harder to make more natural oil and your hair can become extremely oily..its best to go every other day or every couple days not washing your hair. ever heard of shower caps? :) dry shampoo works wonders, you can get it at any salon. PS. non professional shampoo is absoutely disgusting, its full of feces, blood and other gross stuff..its really bad for your hair. and have you noticed that salon products last twice as long as non professional ones? that's because they water down the non professional so you have to use twice as much as a professional one so you have to buy more, isn't it worth it to pay a few more bucks for the professional stuff? and the "professional" stuff at walmart and target and other stores like that are fakes, they're just some other people who rip off the name from the real one and try to make it seem like the real thing and water it down and whatnot..and no one can do anything about it because the big companies would have to go to each store and sue them..they can't sue as a franchise because not every walmart or target or whatever caries them. pretty much sucks. i cringe every time i see unprofessional products, it makes me sick to think about all this information.
Don't forget! If you can't achieve it, weave it!
Hooray! To the solution for oily hair :D
Thank you! These tips were great ♥
