  • I Don't Get Makeup!

I don't. Not at all. Not a shred of it. It's lost on me. I mean, I wear a bit of foundation, a little blush. If I'm feeling adventurous, I'll bust out the mascara and hope that maybe this time I won't poke myself in the eye. That being said, I don't know what exactly compelled me to enter Sephora yesterday afternoon.

I was in my usual jeans and t-shirt combo, with the aforementioned mascara. I felt that I might as well, as I was going to the city. But when I walked into this store, I suddenly felt that I understood Dorothy a whole lot more. I was definitely not in Kansas anymore.

There I stood, stalk still at the entrance to at least 900 square feet of store space devoted to makeup. I had no idea where to begin. I had foolishly thought I could just grab some new foundation or something. Something...but I had no clue. I watched women in immaculate makeup and A-line skirts float about with little effort in their hunt for the perfect shade of whatever, and I felt like an awkward 14 year-old shopping alone for the first time. My sister later laughed on the phone that she could picture me standing there, unsure of what to do as no fewer than four sales people swarmed, asking what I was looking for. I managed to stammer out that I was just looking. "At least you didn't respond with, 'I have no effing clue,'" she chuckled. My 18 year-old sister then promised to teach me the fine art of makeup.

But this still doesn't change the simple truth: I just don't get it.

Whats the big fuss about Sephora stores? Do you find them confusing?

I've never been in a Sephora store, as I'm assuming they're only in America? Heh.

  • kvdubs@xanga

@chelseanataliex@xanga - there are stores overseas.

and I love makeup, but I feel like a kid in a candy store just because there is sooo much makeup.  I, too, get lost.
  • decembriel@xanga

I would be just as lost.

    makeup is pretty overwhelming. >.<

the sephora i went to in manhattan was so big and shiny and full of beautiful people... i just sort of floated around there staring at everything. the one in paris was less scary, so i actually managed to buy something XD

@chelseanataliex@xanga - actually, sephora is not an american brand but a european one. forgot what country it originated in though... look it up! :)

  • chelseanataliex@xanga

@christychik91@xanga - @kvdubs@xanga -  Oh right. Well anyways, I don't think there's any over here in Scotland as I've never seen one. But maybe there is.

i'm afraid to go into sephora alone because i think the over-friendly sales assistants might corner me and cake my face until i look like a clown.

that said, makeup is something learned over time. gradual exposure does the trick.

Sephora IS confusing but if you take a deep breath you'll be ok. And if there was a list you made (I need mascara, foundation, blush, lipgloss) you can lazily take your time with care and focus to try and sort it all out. Or you can just ask someone. And be specific. Remember your list. Because if you tell a sales girl "I want makeup" or "I have no idea what I'm doing," you'll come out with things are are probably not the most practical to wear.

I definately know where you're coming from! I have no clue on anything. Youtube videos only confuse me too! I don't watch them anymore..
I recently went to Sephora for the first time and the employee was not very friendly and brushed me off quickly. Maybe an akward 17 year old isn't what she wanted..

Omg I just posted about this not too long ago!  I had a very similar Sephora experience.  I guess it's just not the world for me!

  • just_the_average_jane@xanga

I would be even more lost, as I've never worn any makeup. Not foundation, not mascara, not blush --nothing!

  • s_h_a_sha@xanga

I don't get it either.  I've got my tried and true brand of makeup and when I'm out or need to replenish or want this season's new colours, I just go to my local department store's Chanel section and get it there.  I can't relish the idea of trying out other brands when I'm happy with what I've got!

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of those type of stores. They have way too much going on, when I'm the type of person that likes to get in and get out.
Thats why I choose just to go to the local drug stores (Walgreens) or even Walmart, to get my make up.
cuz they only have an isle dedicated for it, so its easier looking for what you need.
When the entire huge store has make up lined everywhere, then that just gets frustrating! lol

Sephora is still intimidating to me because I just feel like the girls who work there are on a completely different level than me. My sloppily applied makeup compared to their artistic/crazy/shades I'd never wear display.
I only go into Sephora if I'm with another girl who can help me.

I can imagine how overwhemed you felt. I used to feel the same way about it cause I didnt understand the uses of allllll the types. I didnt start using foundation until last winter and eyeshadow until this past summer..yeah I am a late bloomer. I mean I have always beeb OBSESSED with it but I never knew what to buy or what colors to get..CAUSE THERE WAS SO MUCHH! lol...I didnt wanna get one color that I liked but then not use it cause it wouldnt work with anything.

I just stuck to the basics. some concealer, mascara and eyeliner...and some lipgloss. no lipstick.

It wasnt until I really started getting really close to this girl who was like a makeup GOD. She always did her full on makeup ALL the time. And I went on VACA with her and I would just observe her and how she did it and what she used...What I learned has been a lot from my friends who are experts at it and watching youtube vids...not even kidding. The makeup tutorials on there are amaaazzing. I learned how to put eyeshadow on and now I can do it like nothing.

I lovvveee every color makeup now and my collection has gotten increasingly larger then it was during the summer and DEF since last year.

Its all about learning from someone who know what they are doing.

Its really fun when you get a hang of it. And those makeup stores like sephora will be THE BEST cause you have so many possibilities with your makeup...

    Don't worry, I'm still learning too c: .

  • ac_taylor@xanga

sephora is a beautiful store.  once you get the hang of makeup you'll absolutely love it.

  • midnight_rapture@xanga

I don't understand makeup... at all. I don't ever wear any. If it's a really special occasion, I might wear some eyeshadow. Eyeliner has never looked good on me.. well, I'm convinced that no makeup looks good on me. It all looks to fake.

And I once went to Sephora with my friend and watched her spend $400 on the spot... I think that's ridiculous!

  • The_Tudor_Rose@xanga

I love sephora. The people who work there are higly trained (one of my besties used to work there) and they know what is best for your skin type and how to match it. It is overwhelming, but if you just ask they will point you in the right direction! It's pretty awesome.

Not to mention they fill my Urban Decay addictiong. Best eyeliner ever.
