  • Long Hair, Don't Care?

Last night my brother, Jay, came over to the house. I had just gotten my hair redone. I had a weave that was pretty long ( it was long enough to almost cover my boobs ) it was also mixed color. It was my natural dark brown as well as some honey colored highlights. I got a fresh weave that was quite a bit shorter then the previous one. It's the same color as my natural hair and it just teaches my shoulder. Instead of my brother just saying that he thought it looked nice or perhaps not saying anything at all he decides to say "what made you get some new horse hair in ya head?" My other brother, Jason, had made another smart comment earlier.

Jay and I ended up having a pretty deep conversation about Black women and hair. He told me that he was concerned that his Black sister feels as though having some extra hair somehow improves my self worth. Although it was hard to admit, I told him that it was an insecurity. I have worn my own natural hair on plenty of occasions. When I'm down here in the islands it's acceptable to wear an afro or locks. Back in America, these things are frowned up, judgments are made, and ignorance runs rampid. I've wanted to grow locks for about five years. Being in the islands has given me a great insight to what beauty means to me.

My question to you Xanga-ians is this : is beauty really in the eye of the beholder? Who do you think it beautiful and for what reasons? If I get locks do you think that it will hold me back in the work place?

Do whatever makes you happy. Selfish, but true.

    WAIT!

I love it when girls wear afros! There's this girl at my school who wears her hair in an afro, but she has these cute little clips in it. I love it.
But I mean, do whatever you like. Whatever's convenient. Or whatever you think is pretty.Honestly, weaves sound like a pain...

to be perfectly honest, most people do tend to judge based on small things such as hairstyle.

not fair, but that's life. if you're confident enough one day to wear your natural hair, then more power to you C:

A girlfriend of mine wears wigs to work because it's easiest to deal with. Only one girl has natural hair and you can always tell that this one manager is looking at her just WANTING to say something because of it. And he can't do a damn thing :) And yeah, I've definitely heard of managers asking employees to make their hair more 'in line with company policy' (ie: relaxed, pulled back to hide any and all indications of texture, etc.) and this too makes me unhappy. The thing with locks is that they take a while to get a good length, so when they're just baby locks they look kinda spiky/knotty and I can understand why they're not usually 'work appropriate'. Still though, I think jobs should recognize that people are not their hair. And of course, different jobs are more uptight about this than others.

Ps. I tried really hard not to quote India Arie, lol.

i think natural is best. honey highlights and straightening irons r just a waste of money. ur mom gave birth to u with curly black hair. if i were u, i;d tell the stupud americans to fuck off and do my own thing.
i just shaved my head a few days ago. and i like it, it;s sth i;ve wanted to try for a long time. i have strong facial features and i don;t need my hair to feminize me. fuck the beholder. beauty is in ur own eye. if u think ur beautiful, people will agree.

personally, i love long hair. i've had extensions because its hard to grow out coarse hair! mine was so damaged in middle school that it all fell out, but that was 4 years ago, and ive been growing it out ever since. its tempting to put my extensions back in, but if you are patient and take good care of your hair, it will grow :)

I love my insane, curly, sometimes nappy hair.
    =)

hmmm it's hard for me to say what i think is beautiful... because sooo many different things are... and some of the things i think are beautiful, i'm sure others would not... so, i guess my answer is yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder... a lot of the time anyway

I think you should grow out your locks if you want them. Locks are beautiful once they're well cared for. I'm definitely not a fan of weave, never had it, and I don't like seeing it in other people's heads when it's not well done. In the end though, I guess you should just do whatever makes you feel good about yourself wherever you happen to be.
