Celebrity makeup artist Brett Freedman works with beauties like Vanessa Hudgens, Reba McEntire, Kelly Clarkson, Emily Blunt, and Jessica Lucas, so we're pretty sure to heed any advice he has to give us! According to Freedman, there are 3 necessary tools to fab lashes:
1. A STURDY LASH CURLERBRETT SAYS: This is huge. I'm shocked by how many women don't take advantage of this eye opening, younger-looking-in-a-snap tool. Even if your lashes don't need the extra lift a curler can give, I like the crispness that a little nudge will give by just aligning and evening up the lash line.
TRY: The CURL from Vanitymark (guess what ladies? It’s on sale for $6.50 on
vanitymark.com). Using a curler will make your eyes look as big and expressive as possible. The silicon curling pad is designed for just enough give to curl not crimp lashes.
2. THE PERFECT BLACK MASCARABRETT SAYS: I’m a huge fan of mascara. I love that women can wear oodles of it and it really never ‘reads’ as makeup. What better way to amp up your look than with long, dark lush lashes?!
TRY: L’Oreal Voluminous - I was turned onto this by Annette Benning YEARS ago and it's still one of my faves! It’s a beautiful shade of black black and goes on super smooth!
OR: Cover Girl Lashblast in Very Black - Great formula. Great brush. This is a must-have for my kit and Kelly Clarkson got me to try it! She grabbed a tube while touring and had me give it a try...I loved it!
3. A LASH COMB & BRUSHBRETT SAYS: An additional boost for all the perfectionists out there – a brush/comb is key for me to fluff and separate lashes for a natural and defined lashline.
TRY: The DUO from my line Vanitymark – It’s a dual-sided foldable brush/comb combo that collapses into a tiny, travel-friendly size and easily fluffs lashes pre-mascara and eliminates clumps post-mascara (And it’s also on sale - just $4 on
vanitymark.com).

i have a question to ask: if i have really short eyelashes and it tilts down, is it still possible to curl it up?
@xueyo@xanga - i'd suggest getting it permanently curled the first time..and then curl it with eyelash curler when the curls start to vanish. i had really short eyelashes before getting them curled, but they were noticeably curly after i did it. now when i use eyelash curler and mascara it's REALLY effective (:
i'm always too scared too use a lash curler lol
btw. i LOVE your blog. i'm so glad i subscrbe to it because i get emails with all your posts! i'm sorry i never comment. but i always love your beauty tips and musings
XOXO
@tiffyxmisha@xanga - i've never heard of permanent curl before! what is it like?
@xueyo@xanga - there's this perming lotion that they put on your lashes, and then they elongate your lashes as much as possible by combing them upwards. they'll tape your lashes in a certain direction and you sit there for like..45 minutes
and then your lashes are curly for at least 2 months :D its really worth it.
@tiffyxmisha@xanga - coooool. which country are you from and how much is it?
i already do most of that, and my lashes suck :(
thats what the fluffy side of the lash brush doess!!!! fluffs lashess! lol
I need to get myself a lash curler....and some new mascara
What's a lash comb and brush? >.<
great advice!
I pretty much have no lashes to try this on. I think it'd only be plausible while wearing fake lashes. Haha so sad.
I always do all of these. And I wear mascara every day! It makes you look amazing with barely any makeup.
eyelash curlers scare the shit out of me hahah. I love mascara though, has anyone else tried that covergirl one? I use diorshow right now but its too expensive and dries out really fast
That Voluminous is indeed good stuff. I discovered it a few years back and it's awesome. If I wear nothing else, mascara is nice. But if I do overdo it, or if I curl my lashes and put too much on, my eyes start to look scarily huge because they're already naturally curled up and rather long and I start to look like this: O.O
I use L'Oreal Voluminous and I love it.. It gives good volume AND length.
This has inspired me to use my lash curler now daily... instead of when I can be bothered!
Love Lash Blast!
Ummmm.... I have a tip :p Dont sleep with mascara on! It dries the poor little things out.
Eyelash curlers look like bronze age torture devices. I love mascara though :)
@gazeperception@xanga - I heard that Twiggy did that all the time in the 60s, and her lashes fell out. Not sure if it's true. I read it in Janice Dickinson's book, if I'm not mistaken. Or maybe I read it in another magazine.
