The process of dying your hair at home can be intimidating. So much could go wrong! But have no fear... L'Oreal Hair Color professional,
Joel Warren, shared his tips to help you be successful. Here are a few of them:
1. Play it safe- Only go 2 shades lighter or darker than your natural shade.
2. Choose Your Tone- To decide if you should use warm or cool tones, look at the jewelry you wear. If you wear more gold, than you should use warm tones. If silver looks better on your skin, then you should try a cool tone.
3. Do the Prep Work- Deep condition your hair a few days in advance. The healthier the hair, the better the dye will take to it. To preserve your healthy hair, don't wash it before you dye it!
4. Follow the Directions- Especially the time directions because most dyes will keep processing after you wash it off.
5. Protect Your Skin- To avoid getting stains around your hairline, apply Vaseline. May sound weird, but it's better than having brown ear lobes.
6. Wait 24 hours before washing your with your regular routine. It will help preserve the color. Also, the less frequently you wash it the longer it will last. So try using dry shampoo in between shampoo rinses.

D: wouldn't dyeing hair basically kill it?
Thank you for the tip! Very helpful. =3
@cornyonacob@xanga - You can't kill what's not alive.

These are steps I have been following for such a long time and they really do work. You just have to stick to them.
also, actually do the stupid allergy test!!
i've been dying my hair for a long time and i suddenly developed an allergy to dark red hair dye this month out of the blue : X
hives are not fun when you have hair dye all over your head : X
if you want to go more than 2 shades darker, color your hair red first, or it could turn out green-ish.
dont try to go more than 2 shades lighter at home. your hair will most likely turn orange.
I never go to shops because they always mess my hair up when they dye it. They don't get it the right color.
For example, my hair used to be blonde and black. I told the lady that I wanted it all brown. Somehow, she managed to turn my hair greenish-brown.
Ever since then I've always done my own my hair.
Actually, from what I understand fro my experiences, the color will take better to your hair the more damaged it is. I know that unhealthy hair isn't exactly ideal, but the more porous it is before you apply color, the more the color can get to work--this is why "virgin" hair doesn't always take dye correctly the first time around. If you want to keep your hair healthy, don't dye it or at least don't use boxed dyes--they are supposedly much harsher than going to the salon, albeit easier on the pocketbook.
thanks!
you covered everything i know. ^_^
actully, store-bought hairdye is really bad for your hair.
its made up of metallics & will keep building up on your hair.
go to sallys, it open to public & your haircolor turns out so much better.
Damaged hair absorbs more of the dye than undamaged hair does. So I'm not sure suggesting to constantly condition it before you dye it is a good idea. The more porous the hair, the more easily it is dyed. This is why people will often say to not condition your hair between bleaching it and dying it. Because the hair is damaged from the bleach, it will soak up all the color. Save the intense conditioning for after you've dyed it so that your hair will lock in the color.
Also, maintain the color with shampoos and conditioners specifically made for color treated hair. They will help the colors last longer.
i've never dyed my hair =x
The first time I dyed my hair, it was a complete disaster. I ended up just barely changing the color, but staining the entire floor, the sink, the soap dispenser, and the shower curtain. I've since gotten better.
If you're not into the idea of putting Vaseline on your face, use conditioner instead. I've always used conditioner around my hairline and have never dyed my skin.
I don't follow any of these tips, ever. & My hair is grrreat :D
My boyfriend and I were dyin each others hair... it kind of turned out ok. But it seems like I am always missing one spot or two???
This should have something about how to apply it so you don't miss spots.
avoid getting in on the bathroom wallpaper or the plastic toilet seat.
why does one find 'dry shampoo'? I've never heard of it. it is like baby powder?
good advice!
wella is a good dye for plain black hair. you just have to buy 2 so it goes to the roots and the hair. the catch is they only sell it in beauty salon store and it doesn't include the volumizer or whatever it is called.
