  • Waterproof Mascara for Summer Swimming

With swimming I have one major problem: mascara. I will not leave the house without mascara on. Shallow, I know! Thus, I have a major problem.

I must wear mascara out of the house, yet every mascara, from the expensive to the cheap, smudges. At least all the ones I’ve tried! Waterproof doesn’t necessarily mean smudgeproof! Then I’m presented with trying to wipe the smudges from under my eyes. Not a very attractive look.

I could a) not wear mascara b) remove the mascara c) get tubular mascara. A is out of the question, and B takes too much time! As for C, it’s the perfect solution!

Why? Because tubular mascaras have a high cohesive strength and a low adhesive strength. The mascara binds together and stays in one piece as it slides off your lashes.  And why is this great for swimming? As it comes off in one piece, the bits are easily washed away and there are no smudges to be had!

I was looking for a cheaper alternative to the expensive tubular mascaras out there, and I have to say, the cheapest isn’t so cheap! L’Oreal’s Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara is about $12, while Clinique’s Lash Power Mascara Long Wearing Formula is $18 and blinc’s Kiss Me Mascara (the one that started it all!) is $25.

On to the actual mascara! I like my lashes to be voluminous, lengthened, and hold the curl I put there (yes, everything). Did Beauty Tubes deliver? Sort of. This double-ended mascara has a primer on one end and the actual mascara on the other.

I actually like the brush on the primer more than the brush on the mascara. The primer coated my lashes evenly, didn’t make my mascara grey, and the brush had a bit of a ‘plumping’ effect. I may buy this just for the primer!

As for the other end, the mascara was mediocre. The brush had sparse bristles, which isn’t great as my lashes are really thin, and the brush didn’t really ‘grab’ each lash. A lot of mascara ended on my eyelids instead of my lashes! If you use too many coats, the mascara also makes a few of you lashes ‘stick’ together, creating a what I call the ‘star effect’. Yuck. The volume just wasn’t there, even with repeated wiggling at the root! As for length and curl, the mascara lengthened my lashes nicely, and held the curl quite nicely too! Though the mascara dries a tad bit stiff.

Removal was a breeze in the shower, and this was perfect in the pool! There was also no flaking. This stuff stays put!

The Result? A good standby for now, but I’m onto bigger (and sadly, more expensive) mascaras!

Have you tried this product or a product similar to it? What did you think?
