Advice Needed! Dry Hair and Combination Skin
Here's what I need help with:
1) I am a natural blonde, but lately I've been going platinum. This means suffering through a bleach and tone every eight weeks or so. I love, love, love my platinum blonde locks, as I've mentioned before. The only drawback? My hair is much more dry than normal. Thanks to the bleach and harsh chemicals. I've been trying to wash and condition every other day (and never on the weekends). This seems to be helping a little, but on day two, my hair is dry and my scalp is oilier than would like it to be.
2) As I mentioned yesterday, I have come to the realization that I have combination skin. My t-zone tends to get a little shiny during the day, but I also have some dry patches on my forehead and cheeks. I wash daily and exfoliate regularly. I moisturize. I try to do everything right.
If you have dry, chemically treated hair, how do you care for it? What products are your favorites?
If you have combination skin, what products and treatments do you use? What's worked and what hasn't worked?

I have dry hair too... I heard that we need to shampoo our hair every other day and condition the root everyday to avoid oiliness at the roots and dry ends. I like hair range by Loreal.
And as for the combination skin, I will always use my moisturiser right after washing my face, when the skin is still damp. I'm using St Ives Apricot Anti Blemish and Blackhead cleanser and also Nivea Sparkling White moisturiser. They work for me... :)
Shampoo your scalp only.
Then condition on the ends of your hair.
Shampooing only your scalp will help reduce the dryness in the rest of your hair.
Conditioning only the ends of your hair will help reduce the oiliness of your scalp.
Hope this helps.
hair: mayonnaise. face: honey. I have combo skin and dry hair. HTH! :]
Avoid shampooing all of your hair -- just shampoo your scalp (shampoo makes your hair dry) and condition everything, mostly the roots and ends. I don't have your problems but I wash my hair every two days, and exfoliate daily =]
I've been using the new Aveeno moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and they're amazing! It's definitely helped my hair not be so straw-like. I recommend it. Also try leaving in a high-end deep conditioner for like 10 minutes once a month.
i have the same problem also. i just recently went all over blonde and it fried my tips. the cheapest good conditioner would be cholestrol at a beauty supply, its a good deep conditioner and any other good conditioner there.
for my combination skin, i use St Ives face washes.
if you go on their website, you can do this lil quix thing where they'll recommend what kind of washes to get :)
to moisturize, i use Olay's Anti-Wrinkle Daily Moisture.
personally, thats worked for me, but im not sure for you because everyone has different skin.
i dyed and bleach my hair too.. and i have combination skin haha i know how you feel. I used Matrix biolage conditioner and shampoo for dry and brittle hair for like a week and i left the conditioner in my hair for 3-5 mins and my hair was pretty much back to normal and now i use john frieda daily shampoo and conditioner. I do wash my hair everyday though cuz it gets so greasy. For my combination skin I use a cleanser soap bar called Oriphan (a korean brand) and then use a toner (i forgot what its called) and a moisterizer (clinque moisture surge). I do this every morning and night and I also use The Queen Helen Mint Juliup mask/egg yolk mask once a week. My t-zone still gets oily during the day so i use the clean and clear oil blot pads- doesn't ruin your makeup
You should also avoid shampoos with sulfates or sulfites. They're salts that can further dry your hair. Hair treatments are helpful for dry hair, too. After you apply, quickly heat up your hair with a hair dryer. It will open up the cuticles so the treatment will absorb better. Otherwise, try to avoid heat treatment.
On top of the comments above, take some Thyroid balancing supplements.
i have the same problems as you - dry hair and combination skin!
but yeah i tried shampooing the scalp only and using conditioner at the ends, it doesn't seem to help. despite how many kinds of shampoos and conditioners i've tried before! recently i'm trying to stop using heating appliances too, because they make my hair really dry.
i switched over to trader joe's botanical shampoo and conditioner because they have low levels of a gentle surfactant instead of harsher sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) that most shampoos use and are full of nice healthy plant extracts...it's more gentle on your hair :3
My hair is naturally black but I always dye it differently colors, usually red or brown, but it also goes through extensive heat treatments (blow dry, curling, flat ironing). It's taken me a while to find the products to keep my hair healthy so here are a few tips and products I would recommend.
1. Don't blow dry your hair all the time. Keep your wrapped in a towel for as long as you can and then you can either blow dry it with heat or on cool. I usually have my hair wrapped in a towel until it's at the point where it's light and not damp.
2. C.O. Bigelow Hair Restorative Mask is AMAZINGGG. It's fifteen bucks for a tube, but I only use it once every other week and it keeps my roots for splitting and keeps my hair glossy.
3. FEKKAI GLOSSING CREME- <3333 HAHA! This one is actually really expensive, but I say it's really worth it. It's about 27 bucks for a tube, but it lasts for months if you don't over use it. You only squeeze a pea size amount into your palm, even less if you have short hair and jsut rub it through your hair while it's damp and then blow dry it, or just rub it in while it's dry. Don't put too much in or else your hair will just look oily instead! But really!!! It really does keep your hair glossy and shiny. If you had me pick the mask or creme, I'd definitely pick the Creme cause it always lasts me a good 6+ months and I use it every day.
Well, hope that helps! Thats jsut what I've found that works for me, it may be a while for you to find something that works for you too. Good Luck!
For your hair, try shampooing only once, MAYBE twice a week.
and when you do shampoo, only use a little on the roots of your hair. On the bottom, douse your hair in some sort of moisturizing conditioner. On days when you dont shampoo but still shower, just take a little bit of conditioner and scrub your roots. That should take care of most greasiness and dirts. On the bottom, continue dousing with more conditioner. On days when you dont shower and want to take care of some greasiness, put a little baby powder on the roots. It sops it right up, and is really inexpensive.I also agree with the posters saying not to buy any shampoo with an ingredient "sulfate" in it. Its extremely harsh and unecessary for the purpose of cleaning hair.
HTH (:
i also agree with what everyone else is saying; just wash your scalp and condition your ends. Its somewhat hard if your hair is short though. & i have combo skin as well & use St Ives apricot scrub every other day and a soft cleanser by clean and clear on the other days.
i use hair oils, argan oils are my favorite! i like nbeauty.biz, they always give away freebies!
