Before you spend a ton of money at the salon lightening up your locks for summer, check out these natural ways to lighten your hair with products you already have in your home!

Last week I shared why I’ve never dyed my hair, but every summer I wish my hair was a little bit lighter. But dying your hair is a big decision that could cause damage and is expensive to keep up. If you’re looking for ways to give your hair a subtly sun-kissed look without all the damage, give these natural hair lightening agents a try.

1. Chamomile Tea

It turns out the natural ingredients in chamomile tea are good for more than helping you fall asleep. Brew a few cups of the tea, let it cool, then rinse your hair with it after your shower. Not only will your hair start to lighten naturally, but chamomile is known to reduce dandruff and soothe an irritated scalp.

2. Honey

This go-to natural sweetener contains peroxide, which acts as a lightening agent when mixed with distilled water. Use this mixture as a hair mask for a half of an hour, then rinse it out when you wash your hair in the shower.

3. Cinnamon

I was pretty surprised to learn that my favorite spice had the ability to lighten hair color. Like honey, cinnamon naturally contains peroxide. You can mix ground cinnamon with your normal conditioner to make an overnight hair mask. I’ve heard that cinnamon also helps to bring out any red tones you have in your hair, so I’m anxious to give this technique a try to bring out my natural red highlights this summer!
