Some of you may know that I’m currently in school to get my esthetician’s license, and I’m really glad that I did. Currently, we’re learning about waxing which I didn’t think I would really care for but am actually loving it quite a bit. It turns out there’s a lot to know about waxing, and although the winter seems like hardly the time to be concerned about removing excess body hair, some of us (like myself) love to stay smooth all year round.
If you’re anything like me, here are some things to know about waxing. Hair length: Hair must be at least a quarter of an inch long in order to achieve an optimal wax. This is about four to six weeks worth of growth, so be sure to plan ahead.
Types of wax: Hard wax is ideal for small or sensitive areas like the face or bikini area. Strip wax is intended for larger parts like arms or legs. If you’re especially sensitive to waxing, sugar waxing is definitely your best bet.
How long it will last: Everyone’s growth pattern is different but typically your wax job will look its best between days three and ten when swelling and redness has gone down and before hair growth returns. Unfortunately you have to wait until your hair has grown to a quarter inch befor eyou can get it re-waxed.
What to know before you go: If you can, show up clean and un-lotioned. I definitely recommend you take some extra strength pain-relievers and whatever you do, don’t go the week before your period when your pain receptors are the most sensitive! For that matter, don’t go the week of your period either, because, ew.
When to know you should find a new waxer: There are definitely some red flags you should be on the lookout for when getting waxed; There are plenty of waxers out there that violate their license or just don’t know what they’re doing. If you ever notice your waxer double dipping her wooden spatula in the pot of wax, not wearing gloves or your waxing leaves you bruised, then it’s definitely time to find a new waxer. For recommendations, ask a trusted friend or check out Yelp.
Lovelies, do you get waxed?
