Recently, I've started mixing my Maybelline BB Cream with Benefit's Hello Flawless and I've been pretty pleased with the results. I've always wondered about mixing beauty and hair products, ever since I used to make my L'Oreal Kids Shampoo concoctions when I was younger. Is it really as bad as it seems?

Mixing shampoos will definitely not make all your hair fall out, says cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson, but there are some beauty products that when combined do more harm than good. Avoid mixing AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids, which exfoliate) with retinol products. In fact, don't mix retinols with any other potential irritants (especially salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide), since they can cause drying, redness, and pigmentation issues, says Wilson.

As far as hair products are concerned, don't use oils at the same time as hair sprays and gels. “They can prevent them from setting,” she says. Otherwise, go ahead and make all the cocoa-ginger-berry shampoo you like!

And if you're wondering if it's okay to mix your skincare products with sunscreen, it's totally fine. “Your normal skin care regime of cleanser and moisturizer won’t interfere with the SPF effectiveness and shouldn’t irritate your skin,” says Los Angeles-based dermatologist Ava Shamban, M.D. You can even layer on an antioxidant serum to boost your UV protection. [via Allure]

Do you ever mix products, Lovelies?
