I wear a ton of nail polish. After deciding that I should probably give my nails a break and put away the polish for a day or two, I found that my nails were yellow from all the summery reds and corals that I’ve been wearing all season! Yikes! Luckily, there are a few cheap and easy fixes.
The funny thing is that I always apply a basecoat to my nails, but unfortunately, they are still yellow. Let’s just say that it was almost enough to forget about my ‘I should give my nails a break more often.’ conversation with myself. I mean, those red and coral polishes are just too pretty to resist.
If you have a whitening toothpaste and a new toothbrush, gently scrub your nails until the yellow fades. This is the easiest solution for yellowing nails, and it takes almost no time! Your nails and fingers will be tingly and clean before you know it. Just make sure you either designate that brush as your ‘nail-only’ brush or keep it somewhere far, far away from your regular toothbrush when you’re done.
Soak your nails in water that has lemon juice added or lemon slices. For 1 cup of water, add 1/4 cup lemon juice, or the slices of one lemon. The lemon acts as an astringent and will strip the stains. Dry your hands and apply a clear top coat. This soak will also work with white vinegar instead of lemon juice.
Make a paste from baking soda and water and apply to nails. Let sit for 30 minutes to an hour then rinse with warm water. Baking soda has a natural whitening effect and may get rid of yellow fingernails. [via eHow]
