Ever since I got back from college for the summer, I’ve taken it upon myself to start drinking at least one bottle of water every day (I use my Victoria Secret water bottle, which is about 32 ounces). I mainly made the switch because throughout the year I was addicted to Dasani’s lemon flavored water, but realizing that I can’t afford such luxuries in my apartment next year (I would much rather go broke spending the money on shoes) I had to adjust. Aside from the fact that regular water is way cheaper (duh Alyssa!) it also has tremendous health benefits for your entire body — adding freshly squeezed lemon into the mix just amps up its awesomeness!

Lemon and water are perfect together… I’ve started drinking it every day and I feel more energized than I’ve ever been in my life! After learning about the slew of health benefits associated with drinking water and freshly squeezed lemon juice, I decided to make it a part of my daily diet, squeezing half a lemon in my water bottle for the day.

It’s a natural energizer! Lemons are packed with natural vitamins and minerals that are key to your inner and outer beauty regime as well as your general health. It hydrates and oxygenates the body so you feel revitalized and refreshed. Lemons are high in vitamin C, which is great for fighting colds and boosting your immune system. They’re  also high in potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function and helps to control blood pressure.

It’s cleansing. The citric acid in lemons helps maximize enzyme function, which stimulates the liver and aids in detoxification. The vitamin C component helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes. Lemon water purges toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear as well. It can actually be applied directly to scars (acne scars included!) to help reduce their appearance. Another plus: friends who I’ve recommended drink a glass of hot lemon water in the morning find themselves not craving coffee in the morning. I don’t think it’s a scientifically proven thing, but hey, if it curbs your caffeine addiction, more power to you!

It aids in digestion. Not only will this killer combination relive indigestion, it will also help flush you out. Drink lemon water everyday and you’ll reduce your body’s overall acidity. Lemon is one of the most alkaline foods around. Yes, lemon has citric acid but it does not create acidity in the body once metabolized. Lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings. It also has been shown that people who maintain a more alkaline diet lose weight faster. [via La Jolla Mom]
