So, we all know how expensive makeup can be, right? Department store makeup is always so much fun, but it can cost a lot of money! At the same time though, it’s almost impossible to know what you should, or shouldn’t, buy when it comes to drugstore makeup. It can either look totally cheap or totally chic, but look no further! Here are my top 10 drugstore picks.
10. Revlon Colorstay Foundation
Oh yes! I’m sure you’ve heard it said before, but Revlon’s Colorstay is the best! It comes in two formulas (one for combination/oily skin and one for normal/dry skin), and there are a million different colors. The finish is never cakey, always natural, and looks fantastic!
Oh no! The one downside to Revlon Colorstay? It has to be blended into your skin right away, or else it gets sticky, and can look really unnatural.
My advice? When you’re using it, grab a foundation brush and blend it immediately into your skin!
9. Rimmel London Stay Matte Pressed Powder
Oh yes! It comes in a variety of colors, like Transparent and Sandpaper, and stays put for at least six hours. I never have to reapply, unless it’s a summer day and the dreaded T-Zone gets oily.
Oh no! Not all of the colors are that flattering (I learned that the hard way!), and sometimes they can almost look a little orange.
My advice? Unless you’re tanner than the average girl, grab transparent! But the other colors can look flattering, and even give a nice coverage, just make sure they actually match you.
8. HIP High Intensity Pigments Metallic Shadow Duo
Oh yes! These are one of my favorite drugstore products out there! They come in this convenient little compact, with the shadows on top and a mirror with an eyeshadow sponge underneath. They’re so great, stay on all day, and look fantastic. My favorite is in Platinum (it comes with a gorgeous silver, and a really sparkly black). Bonus? They’re only 5 dollars at CVS!
Oh no! The only downside I can think of is that they really are high intensity pigments.
My advice? If you’re not looking for a bold look, apply them with a brush instead of a sponge. They will go on lighter, and not look quite as intense.
7. Maybelline Ultra Liner
Oh yes! When they say waterproof, they mean waterproof! I went to a pool party once, and had been wearing this earlier that day, when I got home and looked in the mirror 5 hours later, it hadn’t even smudged. Plus, it goes on very smoothly, and doesn’t look jagged or uneven.
Oh no! The brush that comes with this liner is a little different than liquid eyeliners I’m used to. It’s much smaller and is kind of hard to get used to.
My advice? Practice with it! Before you apply the liner, test it on your hand to see if it comes out smoothly. Then start on your eye. After awhile you get used to the brush.
6. Rimmel London Special Eyes Eyeliner
Oh yes! I love this eyeliner formula! It goes on very smoothly, and the colors are fantastic. They stay put all day with minimal retouching, except maybe to clean up any smudging under the eye (I have a really big smile, so my eyeliner smudges there a lot!). They’re only about three dollars at your local CVS.
Oh no! But there are none. Haha, absolutely no complaints here. I love this eyeliner!
5. L’Oreal True Match Liquid Foundation
Oh yes! It doesn’t take much of this to look gorgeous. It had such a matte finish, I almost didn’t put a powder on top of it! You can get anywhere from medium to full coverage, and there are a billion colors to choose from.
Oh no! As much as I liked the way this looked on me, I had a few problems. First off, unless you really know whether you’re a warm, cool, or neutral skin tone, it’s hard to figure out what color you are. Second, I started breaking out when I wore this! I have really sensitive skin, so it’s no surprise. It was only one or two, but it was definitely the foundation that did it.
My advice? If you’re going to buy this know what skin tone you are. (Hint: Cool skin tones are usually a little fair, with pink or blue undertones, and usually only occur in blondes or brunnettes. Neutral skin tones are fair or lighter pink, with yellow or olive undertones. Warm skin tones have a yellow or orange undertone to them.) And don’t use it if your skin is super sensitive!
4. CoverGirl Cheekers Blush
Oh yes! For the price, this is a fantastic blush! It goes on well and is never streaky, plus the formula didn’t break me out. Bonus: the color Pretty Peach in 150 (shown above) is such a pretty peachy-pink (that’s a lot of P’s!) that’s universally flattering on everyone!
Oh no! Some of the colors in this line can look so fake, and it’s obvious you’re wearing loads of blush! My second complaint is that it has a sort of weird smell to it, but it’s not too intense; plus, my skin’s really sensitive and it didn’t break me out like most scented things do.
My advice? Spring for the color above, because peach colors look good on every skin tone! P.S. Ditch the little synthetic brush that comes with it and invest in a good blush brush.
3. L’Oreal Color Juice Lipgloss
Oh yes! These smell so good, and don’t feel too heavy or gloopy. They remind me a lot of Lancome’s juicy tubes! Since L’Oreal owns Lancome though, I guess that shouldn’t be much of a surprise!
Oh no! I’m one of those girls that doesn’t particularly like to use these kinds of lip jellies. I love putting on gloss with a brush!
My advice? If you’re like me, get a lip brush and squeeze the lipgloss onto it before spreading it onto your lips. If you don’t mind putting it directly on, then you’re totally covered!
2. Sonia Kashuk Makeup Brushes
Oh yes! This fantastic line of brushes, available at any Target store, is amazing. I hate spending 20 dollars every time I need a new makeup brush! For half the price I get quality that’s just as good as any MAC brush I’ve ever owned.
Oh no! Unless you treat your brushes with care, they’ll start shedding.
My advice? The first day you get a new makeup brush clean it with a makeup brush cleaner, or even a super gentle face wash (i.e. Cetaphil). They last a whole lot longer, and don’t start falling to bits! Plus, if you don’t clean them, they can start harboring all sorts of nasty bacteria that breaks you out (ewwwww!), so take good care of your brushes.
And finally, my absolute favorite drugstore product! Drum roll please…
1. CoverGirl Lashblast Mascara
Oh yes! I’ve said it a billion times, and I’ll say it again. CoverGirl’s Lasthblast is my favorite mascara of all time. The huge brush gets all of your lashes, and never clumps. It’s never flaky. Never gross. I’m in love.
Oh no! I’ve noticed that I don’t like the original formula as much as I like the waterproof one.
My advice? Grab the waterproof, and just take it off with a makeup remover. It seems to stay on better.
Tip: I always buy my drugstore makeup at CVS! Why? They let you take it back no matter what. It doesn’t matter if you bought it and then decided it was hideous, or if you just decided you wanted something better. Even if you opened it, you can take it right back and get a full refund.
Lovelies, what are your top drugstore makeup picks? Do you have a favorite brand? Or product?
